Author’s Notes:

I repeat, and I will continue to repeat this in every chapter until everyone understands:

The concept of this story is not something that I simply came up with last night and threw together a sloppy chapter. This is the alternative fanfic to the greatest Ki go author of all time, Starving Lunatic. See him here on to read the stories that inspired me.

In order they are:

Walking The Line

On A Leash

The Gods Must Be Laughing

One In A Billion, where this story takes place, just after chapter 17, I believe. It is necessary to at least read the last one to understand the majority of the characters in the story. If you do find this interesting, go to StarvingLunatic’s page and thank them for writing the original concept.

Isabel didn’t want to move to America. She was perfectly happy staying in her room, reading various books and plays in England, taking time out to occasionally go outside for her parkour practice.

There was no need to move to America for what she’d been doing for about the same amount of years she’d first become literate and able to venture outside. Isabel was hoping that even if they were to move, they’d go somewhere where the weather was as fickle as it was at home; maybe the northeast or perhaps even Washington. She’d heard it was particularly rainy there.

Her fragile hopes were dashed when she found we were going to Colorado. The girl was hoping for mountains now. If it was snowy, no one would expect her to go out and socialize; they’d rather Isabel stay warm than talk and freeze. The snow would be a good way to train for parkour as well, since it was about going through obstacles the best you could. Instead, they got in a new car and arrived at the one sunny, cloudless spot in the entire state.

Ralph looked as glum as she felt while his new girlfriend, Ginny, practically crowed about how wonderful it was. Angel was right with her, already looking for people to become friends with. She was eighteen and would be attending college in the fall. Uncle Justin simply parked the car and waited for her father’s girlfriend to stop cooing about the wonderful neighborhood scenery.

She looked in the farthest seat back, where Da, and Isabel sat pouting and said, Cheer up you two. There should be a library nearby, and I know for a fact there’s a community theater you can sit and watch bad actors do equally bad plays.

She perked up slightly. Bad actors were always fun and Isabel lived to see them butcher some of the greatest plays in history. She’d thought about writing a play but didn’t have anything to write about. Her da was a writer, a critic and a house-hold name in Europe despite his American background.

Most people stick to their own groups and rarely, if ever, accept others. It was brilliant people like Da and his friend Abdul-Mohammad from Istanbul who was well-known as an advocate for Muslims all around the world and who’s work was always controversial but beautiful, that broke through the wall and invented their own country.

She’d read all his books to support him, and Da had his own personal copies. Isabel found nothing wrong with them and she couldn’t see why they didn’t leave him alone. She thought it was a lot of hassle to go through despite the fact that his books were more popular than ever.

Uncle Justin opened the truck and pulled out the majority of the bags. Da left and helped him bring the bags into the house, Ginny, and Angel following. Isabel got out the car and picked up the remaining bags, which were her’s, before the girl headed indoors.

Angel was already upstairs, claiming this room only to cancel that when she found another one that she fancied more. She always found one she liked more than the others and Da wouldn’t refuse her unless he wanted them for himself. Isabel placed her bags in the foyer and looked around the house.

The foyer was overly-large and ornate, and led into a hallway with two hallways, one to the living room and the other to a large room with a staircase. On the other side was the kitchen, with a small room off the side Uncle Justin was already settling in.

Isabel went upstairs and looked at the rooms her sister had claimed and dismissed, finding none of them to her liking. She wandered around, finding the library near the largest rooms, obviously her father’s, and wondered if she could just sleep there. Isabel eventually decided no and headed back downstairs.

She headed into the kitchen to see if Uncle Justin wanted to go shopping only to stop when she found another door. She opened it and found that it led to a pair of stairs and the basement. The basement was spacious and comfortable looking with windows just a little higher up than her head; it had wood flooring rather than the tile upstairs and bedding was already there, a large four-poster bed with netting over it.

She sat and jumped a little, finding the frame sturdy and the mattress firm. There was a dresser and a closet carved out of the cement walls. There was a wall blocked off and when the girl opened it, she found a smaller library that she was sure she could have spend the majority of her time in.

Isabel exited her new abode with the intention to tell Da that she had claimed this room, only to find that he and Ginny were gone, already going to settle the deal, and then to go on a celebratory cruise to the Caribbean for about a month.

They had a new woman of the house who was just as distracted and world hungry as their original, although she did kiss her and her sister’s cheeks as they left, a major improvement to before.

Isabel admired her Da very much for his work and loved him in the way only a child could, but he and she rarely spent time together. It was a rather distant and distracted relationship they shared, and she would have it no other way.

Angel decided to stay at the house as Uncle Justin and Isabel got into the BMW to go grocery shopping. There was a small store only a mile away from them and they tried to decide what to have. Isabel was a vegetarian, and had been since Da had killed her rabbit Bartholomew for dinner when she was about seven and her family had also joined in since Mum had found it fashionable, and Ginny right along with her, so that narrowed their choices.

Why don’t we have pasta again? She asked. Uncle Justin shook his head and said, No. We had that on Monday and it’s Wednesday.

Isabel grinned at him, Exactly. My carb take must be low enough to not go into shock now.

He shook his head once more, No. What about mashed potatoes and asparagus tips with some fried tofu?

She thought about it and finally decided that it would be fine. She wandered through the store as he gathered the things for dinner and some fruits and snacks for later.

As the girl was entering the dairy isle she saw a younger girl trying to reach for the ice-cream. She was about twelve or thirteen with long black hair and warm Mediterranean-like skin. Even under the harsh fluorescent lights, her skin appeared to be very well cared for, smooth, and a uniform aureate color.

Despite being unable to reach the top shelf, her legs were long and toned, and she was a beautifully proportioned girl. She wore loose, overly-sized shorts which slid down to reveal a small waist-line and a golden colored stomach where her shirt was pulled up.

She forced herself to not drool. She was a sucker for a beautiful, athletic girl. The girl was at least three years her junior, possibly more, and she was perving over her. She was getting as bad as Old Benny, the bum who lived by her old school who followed the boys incessantly. She found him funny, from a distance. Up close he was rather disturbing.

Isabel approached the girl and asked her, You need any help? She turned towards her and nodded, saying, Yes, please. I was trying to get the Golden Ribbon Swirl but it’s to high. She grabbed it and gave it to her. Their fingers brushed and a flash of familiarity flowed through her. She took a step back and into the direct line of cold from another freezer. Her legs sported gooseflesh from where they weren’t protected by her shorts.

The girl smiled at Isabel and opened her mouth slightly to say something when an obnoxiously loud voice called, Chyna! C’mon, Mom needs us! The person yelling was a boy about a year or so older than her with the same black hair and warm skin-tone. Isabel found her more attractive than him and gave her a smile as she wandered off again to find Uncle Justin.

Uncle Justin stood next to a woman who looked vaguely Hispanic with one eye, with two children about her age holding things up to her, as the adults compared vegetables. She took her iPod out and started searching for something to listen to. She eventually gave up, gave it a good shake and listened to ‘Still Around’ by 30H!3. They were actually a band near there, so she guessed that it was fine for listening to it.

Rather than follow him and make him nervous, making his paranoia worse than it usually is, she instead tugged on his arm and said, I’ll be outside, practicing.

Uncle Justin nodded and said, Be home by six. I decided on tofurkey. She nodded, turned her iPod up, and left for an empty building that she saw a while back. Empty, abandoned buildings were ideal for parkour because of the space required. Parkour was actually something she’d picked up surfing the web a few years back.

Isabel’d stumbled onto this website dedicated to the philosophy and training of parkour, which immediately interested her. To be able to go over most of the obstacles that life throws at you, and reach the limits of your mental and physical body, was a summary of it and she thought that it was interesting.

Parkour was intended to use the least amount of time and energy to get somewhere in an emergency, rather than the free-running most people did.

Free-running was what they did in malls and public places, showing off, doing tricks to stun the crowds, taking unnecessary risks and acrobatics to complete whatever it was they were doing. They were more about style than efficiency, although she didn’t fault them. Doing what you loved was worth more than the acceptance of a few people, was how she felt about it.

She practiced for hours, vaulting off of one overpass to another, leaping and rolling on landing to lessen the impact, jumping, running and twisting from the third floor’s enclose to the first, doing everything her body could in as swift a time as she could. She’d turned her iPod off earlier because her constant movement made it change songs. She leaped from the fourth floor to the second’s enclosure and then dropped to the first, exhausted.

The girl was sweaty and she wiped her forehead off before leaving the building, and starting on her way home. She was aware of the girl from the store following her, along with several others. Not the cute one by the ice-cream but the one by the one-eyed woman, and it was rather annoying.

She went another block before turning and looking at the girl. The other girl paused mid-stride, staring at her with one black eye and another brown eye.

Yeah? Isabel asked, leaning against a wall, pining the other girl with her olive eyes. The other girl said, What?

Isabel rolled her eyes, You were following me for a reason, I suspect.

The other girl glared at her, I was interested in the martial arts that you were practicing in that building back there.

Parkour, now leave me alone. Isabel turned away from her and continued home.

The girl stuck her tongue out at her and turned around as well, her friends and brothers coming out of the bushes to follow their leader home. Anna turned to look at the girl that was heading in the opposite direction and shook her head before jogging to keep up with her brother.
